How the Official Washoe County Inmate Search Works
The public inmate search is designed for people currently incarcerated in the Washoe County Detention Facility. The Sheriff warns that custody information changes quickly and should be independently verified before it is used for an important decision.
Start With the Last Name
The current search requires at least the first three letters of the person’s last name. Use additional letters when a surname is common.
Updated Every 15 Minutes
Washoe County says the online custody information is refreshed every 15 minutes. Recent booking or release activity can still change between checks.
Current In-Custody Records
The public search is not a complete historical arrest archive. Use court or records-request systems for older case research.

Washoe County Jail Inmate Search Step by Step
- Open the official Sheriff’s inmate search. Confirm the page belongs to the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office.
- Enter at least three letters of the last name. Use more of the legal surname when the result list is broad.
- Open the matching record carefully. Compare available identifiers, booking information, charges and court details rather than relying on the name alone.
- Save the booking or inmate identifier. The number can be useful for mail, money, phone, visitation and court follow-up.
- Check bail only after the judge acts. WCSO says bail is no longer automatically set from a new charge.
- Verify the court separately. Use the Justice, Municipal or District Court attached to the case.
- Recheck custody before the next action. Transfers or release can change where mail, money and visits belong.
Washoe County Mugshot and Privacy Update
This means an older article or cached search result that says the Washoe roster shows inmate mugshots is outdated.
Do not use a copied mugshot from a commercial site as proof of identity, current custody or guilt. A booking photograph can also become stale after a person is released or transferred.
How to Read Washoe County Jail Information
| Information | What it can tell you | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| In-custody status | The person appears in current Washoe County detention data. | That the person will remain there later in the day. |
| Booking / inmate number | A stronger identifier for jail services and follow-up. | Final court disposition. |
| Charge | The accusation or legal basis attached to the booking record. | Guilt or conviction. |
| Bail amount | The amount ordered after judicial review when bail is set. | Guaranteed immediate release after payment. |
| Court | The judicial system connected to the pending matter. | That the jail page contains the complete court docket. |
| Hold / no-bail status | A potential reason release may not occur through ordinary bail. | The final outcome of every case or outside-agency matter. |
What to Do When the Washoe County Search Finds No One
Booking May Be Incomplete
Fingerprinting, warrants checks, medical screening and intake can occur before the public record is ready.
Try More or Fewer Letters
Recheck legal spelling, suffixes, hyphens and known surname variations.
Released or Transferred
The person may have been released, moved to another agency or entered Nevada state or federal custody.
Not Every Record Is Public
The Sheriff’s Office warns that the online result may not be a complete list of every person in custody.
Washoe County Bail and Release Rules
Washoe County now states that bail is not automatically assigned merely because a new charge appears. Once a judge sets bail, the Sheriff’s information is updated with the amount imposed.
Own Recognizance Review
The Sheriff’s Office says inmates are interviewed for possible Own Recognizance release within 24 hours. If OR release is approved, the person can be released without posting bail.
Judge-Set Bail or No Bail
If OR release is not granted, a judge may set bail or order the person held without bail depending on the case.
Accepted Bail Methods
For applicable court bail, Washoe County lists the following traditional payment forms:
- U.S. currency.
- Certified checks drawn on U.S. banks.
- Cashier’s checks drawn on U.S. banks.
- Postal money orders with the amount typed or stamped.
- Bonds posted by accepted bail agents, except where cash-only bail or a fine prevents that method.
Checks and money orders should be payable to the court hearing the case, not simply to “Washoe County Jail.”
Card Payments for Cash Bail
The Sheriff’s Office also links to a third-party GovPayNet payment route for qualifying cash bail. The payment system requires:
- Court of jurisdiction.
- Payment amount.
- Arrestee or defendant name.
- Date of birth.
- Booking number.
How Long Does Release Take?
After bail is properly posted, the Sheriff’s Office says the release process can take up to eight hours. Another court case, hold, identification issue or outside-agency matter can delay release further.
For people released after completing their sentence, the Sheriff’s Office lists the usual “time served” release time as 5:00 a.m., although operational circumstances can affect release processing.

Which Washoe County Court Should You Check?
The jail roster is not the final court record. Washoe County criminal cases can move through different courts depending on the arrest location, charge level and stage of the case.
| Court | Common role | Official resource |

Commissary and Inmate Money Accounts
Washoe County uses different systems depending on whether you are funding commissary or communication services.
| Purpose | Current route | Important note |
|---|---|---|
| Commissary / inmate account | Lobby kiosk or JailATM | Online JailATM deposits use credit cards. |
| Lobby deposit | Sheriff’s Office foyer or visiting lobby kiosk | WCSO lists cash or credit-card deposits. |
| Mailed account funds | Money order or cashier’s check to Inmate Accounting | Include the inmate name and verify current mailing instructions first. |
| Phone / email / visit / entertainment credit | Smart Communications | This is separate from commissary purchasing. |
JailATM
The Sheriff links to JailATM for online commissary deposits. Commissary can include snacks, writing supplies, stamped envelopes, toiletries, approved over-the-counter products and other available items.
Housing units receive commissary service once per week.
Smart Communications Funds
Smart Communications account funding can be used for eligible phone, email, visit and entertainment services. Do not assume that this balance is the same as the inmate’s commissary account.
