Why Booking Photos Are Different Now

The Davis County roster detail page states that inmate photos are no longer provided on the website under Utah Code §17-22-30. It also identifies booking photos as protected records under Utah GRAMA.

If a person is no longer in custody, Davis County says information — including booking-photo requests — may be pursued through its records-request process. A request does not guarantee that a protected photo will be released.

Important Davis County Inmate-Family Scam Warning

Davis County currently warns families about fraudulent early-release calls. Scammers have claimed that a person can qualify for an ankle-monitor program if the family sends a large payment, sometimes in Bitcoin. The Sheriff says its Ankle Monitor Program is court-ordered, does not require direct payment from families, and the Sheriff does not accept Bitcoin for the program.

Davis County also states that the Sheriff’s Office will not call or text demanding money. If someone contacts you unexpectedly and asks for an urgent payment, hang up and verify the request through the Sheriff’s published phone number rather than a number supplied by the caller.

Bail, Bond and Release Processing

The court determines bail. Davis County says an inmate who is eligible for bail may be bailed out 24 hours a day, but processing can take several hours when the facility is busy.

Visitor Rules Worth Checking Before You Travel

  • Visitors age 18 or older must present valid government identification.
  • Visitors are limited to two adults or one adult and two children.
  • Minors must be with a parent or documented legal guardian.
  • Unrelated minors are not allowed to visit.
  • A person arrested, bailed, sentenced or incarcerated at the facility during the previous calendar year generally cannot visit another inmate, with exceptions for spouses, children and parents.
  • People under the influence of alcohol or drugs are not admitted.
  • Food and drinks are not allowed in the visiting area.
  • Dress standards prohibit bare midriffs, low-cut tops, miniskirts, see-through or revealing clothing; shoes are required.

Books, Magazines and Newspapers

Books must come directly from a bookstore or publisher, be new and paperback, measure no more than 8.5 × 11 inches and be no thicker than two inches. Davis County allows no more than five books at one time.

Magazines, newspapers and other periodicals must be subscriptions sent directly by the publisher through USPS. The current rule allows up to two subscriptions and only one newspaper.

Legal Mail

Davis County says legal mail is opened only in the inmate’s presence. Do not mix privileged correspondence with ordinary personal mail or assume the general postcard rules explain every requirement for attorney correspondence.

After release: mail is normally returned to the sender. If it cannot be returned, or if it is being returned to the released person, Davis County says it may be picked up within 30 days. After that, it is destroyed.

Booking, Medical Items and Medication

During intake, Davis County says a booked person is given an opportunity to contact a person of their choice, excluding victims, to advise them of the situation. Personal belongings are secured and basic clothing, bedding and hygiene needs are provided during custody.

Eyeglasses, contacts and prescription medications may be brought to the facility lobby during regular business hours, but prescription medication must be reviewed and approved by medical staff. The facility says most medications are provided in-house.

Do not assume outside medication will simply be handed to the inmate. If the medication issue is urgent, contact the facility and explain the medical concern so staff can direct you to the correct process.

How Inmate Property Release Works

Davis County has a specific property-release schedule. The inmate must complete a property-release form and forward it to the property officer by Friday before 5 p.m. for release the following Monday between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

  • The person collecting property must present government-issued photo identification.
  • An inmate may release property only once while incarcerated.
  • Property left after transfer to another correctional facility may be claimed through the facility process.
  • Unclaimed transferred-inmate property is subject to disposal after 30 days.

For police or investigative reports, the Sheriff FAQ currently lists a $10 processing fee per police report plus $0.25 per page for other documentation and states GRAMA allows up to 10 working days for the requested records or a denial.
