CCDOC Jail Inmate Search: Cook County Locator & Visits

Cook County, Illinois • Independent custody search guide

Find the Right Cook County Jail Record Before You Visit, Pay or Send Money

Start with the Cook County Sheriff’s official Individual in Custody Locator. Search by the person’s full first and last name or by Cook County Booking ID, then confirm the current housing location before using any jail service.

Cook County jail custody, Illinois pretrial decisions, court dockets, IDOC state-prison records, visits, mail, trust funds and victim notifications are separate systems. This guide explains which official source to use next.

Custody, housing, release conditions, court status and jail procedures can change. Verify current information directly through the responsible official source before paying, travelling, mailing anything or making an important decision. An arrest, booking, charge, jail listing or booking photograph does not establish guilt or conviction.

Fast Answer

For a Cook County jail inmate search, use the Cook County Sheriff’s official Individual in Custody Locator. The current search form accepts either the person’s full first name plus full last name or a Cook County Booking ID. When searching by Booking ID, the Sheriff instructs users to enter it without the hyphen.

After finding the correct record, save the Booking ID and current housing information. Those details are important for mail, trust-account deposits, visitation and property pickup. Use the Cook County Clerk separately for the criminal case because the jail locator is not the official court record.

Which Cook County Source Should You Use?

This helper does not search the Sheriff, Clerk, IDOC, BOP, ICE or VINE databases. It only routes you to the official source that matches the task.

Select a task above

The matching official route will appear here.

The Cook County Sheriff’s locator is the correct first stop for current Cook County Department of Corrections custody. It is different from IDOC’s state-prison search and from the Clerk’s court docket.

  1. Open the official Sheriff locator. Avoid starting with a copied jail roster, mugshot directory or paid background-check page.
  2. Choose name or Booking ID. The current form accepts a full first name plus full last name, or a Cook County Booking ID.
  3. Remove the hyphen from the Booking ID. The Sheriff specifically instructs users not to include the hyphen when entering this number.
  4. Match the correct person carefully. Similar names are common in a large county. Compare the available booking and housing details before relying on the result.
  5. Save the Booking ID and housing location. You may need them for mail, deposits, visitation, property or other jail services.
  6. Check the court case separately. Use the Clerk of the Circuit Court for docket activity, court dates and later case developments.
  7. Recheck before acting. Custody and housing can change. Verify again before visiting, sending money, mailing documents or travelling to the jail.

What to Record From the Search Result

Identity

Booking ID

Keep the Cook County Booking ID. It is one of the most useful identifiers for mail, deposits and jail-service questions.

Housing

Current Division

The housing division can affect visitation procedures and determines which property-pickup workflow applies.

Custody

Current Status

Use the live Sheriff source for current custody. Do not rely on an old screenshot or an archived booking page.

Court

Separate Docket

A jail record does not establish the final charge, disposition, sentence or next court event. Check the Clerk separately.

Booking photo caution: a booking photograph can help distinguish similar names, but it does not prove guilt, conviction, current custody, current appearance or final case outcome. The preferred approach is to view any current photo through the Sheriff’s official locator rather than permanently republishing it.

Why a Recently Arrested Person May Not Appear Yet

The Cook County Sheriff’s communications office states that Individual in Custody Locator results are typically published about 4 to 6 hours after a person has been booked and processed into the jail. That makes a short delay after arrest normal.

Processing

Booking Is Still Underway

Transport, intake, fingerprints, screening and processing may occur before the public locator record is available.

Different stage

Released Before Full Booking

The Sheriff’s Office notes that some people released after court are not fully booked into CCDOC, so a normal locator entry or booking photo may never appear.

Different system

County Search Is Not Universal

The person may be in another county, IDOC state custody, federal custody, immigration detention or another temporary holding process.

Use This No-Result Sequence

  1. Recheck the exact spelling of the full legal name.
  2. Use the Booking ID if you have it, entering it without the hyphen.
  3. Allow for the Sheriff’s typical booking-and-processing delay after a recent arrest.
  4. Confirm that Cook County, not another Illinois county, has custody.
  5. Check IDOC if transfer to Illinois state prison is possible.
  6. Check the federal BOP locator when federal prison custody is genuinely possible.
  7. Use ICE’s locator only when immigration detention is relevant.
  8. Use Illinois VINE for supported custody or court-status information and notifications.
  9. Call the Sheriff’s automated information line at 773-674-5245 when appropriate.
No result does not prove release. A missing result can reflect processing delay, a different custody system, transfer, release before full booking, a name mismatch or another administrative reason.

Cook County Pretrial Release and Legacy Cash Bond

Illinois changed its pretrial system on September 18, 2023, when cash bail was eliminated for cases governed by the new system. For newer cases, release or detention is determined through the court’s pretrial process rather than by simply paying a newly set cash-bail amount.

Cook County nevertheless maintains a bonding process because the Sheriff’s current instructions state that cases filed before September 18, 2023 may still have cash-bond requirements. Do not assume that every current Cook County detainee can be released by paying money.

Modern cases

Pretrial Release or Detention

The court determines whether a defendant is released subject to conditions or detained under Illinois pretrial law. Review the current court order rather than relying on old bail terminology.

Legacy cases

Cash Bond May Still Exist

For a case filed before September 18, 2023 that still carries a payable monetary bond, follow the Sheriff’s current bonding instructions and verify the docket first.

Current Cook County Jail Bonding Location for Applicable Cases

Division 5 2700 S. California Ave. Chicago, IL 60608 Current posted hours: 10:00 a.m.–6:00 p.m., 365 days a year

The Sheriff’s current bonding page lists cash, bank/cashier checks and in-person credit or debit card payment for applicable cases. Credit/debit transactions currently carry a stated 2.13% non-refundable service fee. Personal checks and money orders are not accepted for bond.

Release timing: when a valid legacy bond is posted, the Sheriff says discharge can take approximately 2 to 3 hours. It may take longer when GPS monitoring must be arranged, and a hold from another agency can affect the process. Never promise an exact release time.

Cook County Court Records and Court Dates

Use the Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County for the criminal case itself. The Clerk describes its online system as an electronic docket containing brief summaries of court documents and events; it is useful for case status, but it is not the official court record.

The Clerk also warns that recent filings or events can take a few days to appear online. For an official or certified record, use the Clerk’s official repository or the responsible courthouse rather than treating the online summary as a certified court document.

Cook County Jail Visitation

CCDOC requires visitor approval. The Sheriff’s locator and visitation system are connected, so first locate the person and confirm the current housing information before trying to schedule.

  1. Find the person in the Sheriff locator. Use the current Booking ID and housing information.
  2. Complete the visitor application. The Sheriff strongly encourages online submission through the official system.
  3. Wait for approval. The current locator FAQ says applications are processed within about 7 business days; call the Visitor Information Center after that period to check status.
  4. Schedule the in-person visit. Approved visitors can use the Sheriff’s in-person scheduling application.
  5. For family video visits, follow current CCDOC instructions. The Sheriff currently uses Microsoft Teams for family video visits and says the visitor needs an active Teams account tied to an email address.
  6. Recheck before travel. Visit procedures and division schedules can change for operational or security reasons.

How to Send Mail to Cook County Jail

The Sheriff’s current mail instructions require the individual’s name and Booking ID. Do not use the old 2600 S. California address shown on older copies of this article.

If you do not know the Booking ID, retrieve it from the official locator or call the automated system at 773-674-5245.

Before mailing

How Cook County Jail Property Pickup Works

Property pickup depends on the person’s current housing division, which is another reason to check the live locator before driving to the jail campus.

Direct to Division 5

Divisions 2, 3 Annex, 5, 8 RTU, 8 Cermak or 16

The Sheriff’s current instructions direct property pickup for people housed in these areas to Division 5 at 2700 S. California Ave.

Current posted hours: every day, 9:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m.

Release form first

Divisions 6, 9 or 11

First go to the person’s housing division and ask a Correctional Liaison for a property-release form signed by the person in custody. The signed form is then taken to Division 5.

The Sheriff’s current page lists liaison public-assistance hours as Monday–Friday, 9:00 a.m.–1:30 p.m.

Bring valid identification. The Sheriff also advises that property pickup may take 1–2 hours. If the person was transferred to IDOC or another correctional facility, a signed release form from the person in custody is required before the recipient goes to Division 5.

Cook County Sheriff Records and FOIA

A current jail locator and a records request serve different purposes. If you need Sheriff-maintained records rather than current custody, use the Sheriff’s Freedom of Information Act process.

FOIA Is Not a Complete Background Check

Chicago Police records are separate. The Cook County Sheriff’s Office expressly notes that it is an independent entity from the Chicago Police Department. Use the agency that actually created or maintains the record you need.

  • Confirm that Cook County is the correct jurisdiction.
  • Use the official Individual in Custody Locator rather than a copied roster.
  • Match the person with more than a common name whenever possible.
  • Save the Booking ID and current housing location.
  • Check the Clerk’s docket separately for the criminal case.
  • Do not assume a displayed historical bond rule applies to a modern post-September 2023 case.
  • Recheck mail, visit, phone and trust-account rules before spending money.
  • Do not treat an arrest, booking, charge or mugshot as proof of guilt or conviction.

Cook County Jail Inmate Search FAQs

What is the official Cook County jail inmate search?

Use the Cook County Sheriff’s Individual in Custody Locator for current Cook County Department of Corrections custody information. It is the primary public jail-locator route for CCDOC.

Can I search the Cook County jail by booking number?

Yes. The current official locator accepts a Cook County Booking ID and tells users to enter it without the hyphen. You can also search using the person’s full first name and full last name.

Why is a recently arrested person not showing in the Cook County locator?

The Sheriff’s Office says locator results are typically published about four to six hours after a person has been booked and processed. A missing result can also reflect release before full booking, transfer, a different custody system or a name mismatch.

Where is the Cook County Department of Corrections?

The Sheriff’s current corrections page lists the CCDOC main address as 2700 South California Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60608. Customer service is 773-674-1945.

Does Cook County still use cash bail?

Illinois eliminated cash bail for the modern pretrial system beginning September 18, 2023. Cook County’s current bonding instructions say cases filed before September 18, 2023 may still have cash-bond requirements, so always check the current court order and docket.

How do I send mail to someone in Cook County Jail?

Address the mail with the individual’s name and Booking ID to 2700 S. California Ave., Chicago, IL 60608. Review the Sheriff’s current prohibited-item rules before mailing because restricted material can cause the entire package to be returned.

How can I add money to a Cook County jail trust account?

The Sheriff’s current trust-account page lists Western Union, MoneyGram, JailATM, USPS money orders or cashier’s checks, participating currency exchanges and jail lobby kiosks. Many methods require the exact name and Booking ID shown by the Sheriff.

How do Cook County jail visits work?

Visitors must follow the CCDOC approval process. In-person visits are scheduled through the Sheriff’s visitation system, while current family video-visit guidance uses Microsoft Teams. Recheck the person’s current division and the latest visit instructions before travelling.

Where do I check a Cook County criminal court case?

Use the Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County’s online case information service. The Clerk states that the online electronic docket is a summary and not the official court record, and very recent entries may take a few days to appear.

What is the difference between Cook County Jail and IDOC?

Cook County Department of Corrections is the county jail system operated by the Cook County Sheriff’s Office. The Illinois Department of Corrections manages state-prison custody, so someone transferred to an Illinois state correctional facility should be searched through IDOC instead.

Reliable Cook County workflow: identify the custody system → search the Sheriff’s official locator → save the Booking ID and housing location → check the Clerk docket separately → use the current official visit, mail, trust, phone or property instructions → verify again before acting.
