Lyon County Jail Roster: Check Custody Before You Call, Pay or Visit

This guide covers the Lyon County Jail in Marshall, Minnesota. Start with the county’s official current-inmate roster, then use the jail, court, VINE or Minnesota DOC source that matches your next task.

The roster is a custody snapshot—not a final criminal judgment. Verify recent bookings, bail, releases and transfers before relying on a roster entry.

Confirm current information through the responsible official source before paying, travelling, mailing anything or making an important decision. An arrest, booking, charge, jail listing or booking image does not by itself establish guilt or conviction.

Fast Answer

For current Lyon County, Minnesota jail custody, begin with the official Lyon County Jail Roster page. The county says the current-inmate site is automatically updated every 12 hours.

If the booking, bail payment, court transport, release or transfer happened recently, call the jail at 507-929-6623 rather than assuming the online list reflects the exact minute. Use Minnesota Court Records Online separately for the legal case history.

How to Use the Official Lyon County Jail Roster

  1. Open the official county roster page. Confirm you are on Lyon County, Minnesota’s government website before following the current-roster link.
  2. Check the 12-hour update warning. Treat the list as a time-sensitive snapshot rather than minute-by-minute release confirmation.
  3. Match more than a name. Review the full name, booking date/time, arresting agency and other displayed identifying context before deciding you found the correct person.
  4. Read the entire custody entry. A charge line, status label, sentence field or image does not tell the whole court or release story.
  5. Use MCRO for the case itself. Court filings, hearings and dispositions belong in Minnesota Court Records Online or Lyon County District Court—not the jail roster.
  6. Call when timing matters. For a fresh arrest, recently posted bail, scheduled pickup or possible transfer, verify directly with the jail.
Do not copy the roster into another database. The official list is designed for current custody information. Booking photos or roster entries should not be republished as permanent person profiles, and a roster listing does not establish guilt.

What the Lyon County In-Custody List Can Show

Roster field What it can help explain What it does not prove
Name / identity Who the county roster entry refers to. Identity from a common name alone.
Image field May help distinguish people with similar names. Guilt, conviction, current appearance or final case outcome.
Booking date and time When the jail booking was recorded. Exact arrest time or permanent custody.
Arresting agency The agency associated with the booking entry. Which agency will ultimately prosecute or sentence the case.
Charge description The charge or custody basis displayed by the roster. Final filed charge, conviction or sentence.
Status Operational custody information such as bail, hold, sentence or release-related status when shown. Complete court disposition or guaranteed release eligibility.
Sentence / completion fields Can provide correctional timing context when populated. Freedom from every other warrant, hold or jurisdiction.
Mugshot search caution: users often search for “Lyon County mugshots,” but the official roster should be treated as a custody resource, not a photo gallery. A booking image should never be used to imply guilt, dangerousness or character.

What to Do if Someone Is Not on the Lyon County Jail Roster

Fresh arrest

Booking May Still Be Processing

The 12-hour roster refresh means a very recent intake may not yet be reflected online.

Name issue

Check Spelling

Try the legal surname, alternate spelling, maiden or hyphenated name rather than relying on a nickname.

Different custody

Another County or State

The person may be in another county, transferred, released or moved into Minnesota DOC custody.

Court only

Case May Still Exist

A court case can remain visible in MCRO even when the person is no longer listed in local jail custody.

  1. Recheck the person’s legal-name spelling.
  2. Confirm you mean Lyon County, Minnesota.
  3. Consider the county’s 12-hour roster update cycle.
  4. Call the jail if the arrest or release was very recent.
  5. Check MCRO for the court case.
  6. Check Minnesota DOC if a transfer to state custody is possible.
  7. Use federal resources only when the matter is actually federal.
  8. Use VINE where custody-status notification is appropriate.
No roster result does not automatically mean release. It can also reflect intake delay, another facility, transport, state custody, a name mismatch or another custody system.

Lyon County Bail: Courthouse by Day, Jail Lobby After Hours

Lyon County publishes an unusually clear bail-location rule. The correct destination depends on the time of day.

Situation Official Lyon County instruction Practical check
8:00 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Post bail at the Court Administrator’s office on the 3rd floor of the courthouse. Do not automatically go to the jail lobby during business hours.
After normal business hours Go to the jail front lobby and ask for the on-duty Sergeant or Correctional Officer. Call first when the custody or bail status changed recently.
Personal checks The jail policy says personal checks are not accepted for bail. Confirm currently accepted payment methods before travelling.
Bail bond A bail bondsman may be used when that option is permitted by the court order. Do not assume every case allows a commercial bond.
A displayed bail amount does not guarantee immediate release. Another case, warrant, probation or parole issue, hold, transfer or court condition can affect release. Confirm the full custody situation before paying anyone.

Sentenced Release Timing

The county policy says sentenced inmates are generally released at approximately 8:00 a.m. on the scheduled release date and may be picked up in the jail lobby after that time. The county also warns that release may not occur exactly at 8:00 a.m.

Do not promise an exact pickup time. Release processing can require final administrative checks.

How to Send Mail to Lyon County Jail

Lyon County Jail C/O “Inmate Name” 611 West Main Street Marshall, MN 56258

Use the person’s name as shown by the official custody source. The current county policy also states that outgoing envelopes cannot contain writing or drawings other than the required address and that the inmate’s name must be clearly printed on the envelope.

Personal mail is not automatically legal mail. Do not assume ordinary mail instructions apply to privileged attorney correspondence, packages, books or other special material. Verify the correct procedure directly with the jail when the mail type is different.

Leaving an Inmate a Message

Call 507-401-4560 to use the inmate message system.

  • Messages are not confidential.
  • Jail staff will not pass messages directly to inmates.
  • Do not leave passwords, sensitive case strategy, witness information or other private information on an ordinary message system.

Reliance Telephone, Phone Cards and Texting

Phone cards

Reliance Telephone

Lyon County says inmates may purchase phone cards through the jail or online through Reliance Telephone.

The county currently lists $10 and $20 phone-card amounts and says other phone cards will not work with its jail phones.

Ordinary jail calls, messages and texting should not be assumed to be confidential attorney-client communication.

How to Deposit Money for a Lyon County Jail Inmate

Inmate-account money is not bail. Lyon County publishes both a jail-lobby kiosk method and an online Inmate Canteen method.

In person

Jail Lobby Kiosk

Money may be deposited during the day or night at the kiosk in the Lyon County Law Enforcement Center / jail lobby.

During business hours, enter through the main entrance. After hours, the county instructs visitors to use the beige phone in the first lobby for access.

Online

Inmate Canteen

The official jail policy links to Inmate Canteen for online credit-card deposits to an inmate account.

Open Inmate Canteen ↗

Kiosk receipt warning: the county says the kiosk does not produce a receipt. It displays a transaction number, so write that number down before leaving.
Scam protection: do not send money because of an unsolicited call, text, social-media message or demand for gift cards or cryptocurrency. Confirm the person’s facility and approved payment route first.

Lyon County Pay for Stay and Release Programs

Pay for Stay

$20 Per Day for Convicted Inmates

The current county policy states that convicted inmates are assessed $20 per day, including credited days, under Minnesota’s county-jail Pay for Stay authority.

An unpaid balance may be invoiced at release. The policy says payment or payment arrangements must be made within 30 days.

Waiver timing

Written Waiver Request

The county policy says a person seeking waiver of Pay for Stay fees must make the request in writing to the Sheriff or Jail Administrator within 5 days after release after receiving the invoice.

Work Release, Education Release and STS

People granted work release, education release, Sentence to Serve or a similar release privilege must complete the county’s required program verification before beginning the sentence.

The current jail policy lists 507-929-6645 for release-program questions.

A court-authorized release program is not automatic. Do not assume a roster entry alone establishes eligibility.
